The college experience is more satisfying and rewarding when students get involved
and express their interest, talents and skills while working with others. While
mixing the pleasures of extra-curricular activities with the rigors of academics,
you will become discipline in managing your time and develop life long leaderships skills.
Hundreds of opportunities exist at Shaw University for student involvement. Student organizations,
programs, intramurals, intercollegiate activities, clubs, lecture series, and hall programs are just
some of the many ways students may connect with the university.

TYPES OF ORGANIZATIONS
Special interest clubs & Organizations
Diversity among the student body suggests an array of talents, skills, and interest. Special interest
clubs, organizations and groups provide an opportunity to enhance the skills and talents of this
diverse group with the ability to express them not only in the classroom, but to the Shaw
University Community.
Religious Organizations
The college experience provides an opportunity for the student to develop his or her value system
in a non-threatened and supportive environment. In such, students are able to participate in there
own personal religious practices of devotion, fellowship and worship.
Fraternities and Sororities
Historically Greek-Lettered Organizations have assumed an active role in contributing to
the cultural, scholastic, political, service and social life of the campus and providing leadership
opportunities for students. At Shaw University, Fraternities & Sororities are involved in educational
programs, community service, and leadership development.
GETTING IN GEAR
Students who wish to participate in activities, join an organization, pursue special interests,
or assist in planning campus activities, see the Director of Student Activities or the advisor
of the respective organizations.

DEVINE NINE
The Pan-Hellenic Council serves as a standard-setting and implementing body for the
affiliate organizations in the areas of educational programming, community service,
social functions, and the intake of new members. It also monitors and regulates the
actions of member organizations as they affect campus life.
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, founded on January 15, 1908, at Howard University, was
organized to “cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards, improve the
social stature of the Negro, promote unity and friendship among college women and keep
alive within the alumnae an interest in college life....”
Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.
Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., founded at Cornell University on December 4, 1906, is
the first predominantly African American collegiate fraternity started in the United
States. It strives to promote scholarship, manly deeds, and love for all mankind.
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was established January 20, 1913, at Howard
University. The Sorority emphasizes scholarship, fellowship, and public service.
Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.
Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. was founded and chartered January 5, 1911, on the
campus of Indiana University at Bloomington. Each chapter of the Fraternity has the
same fundamental purpose, which is “achievement in every field of human endeavor.”
Omega Psi Phi Fraternity
The Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., founded on November 17, 1911, at Howard
University, was organized on the four cardinal principles of manhood, scholarship,
perseverance, and uplift. Conceived for the purpose of linking men of like ideals and
similar attainments, the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. has impacted the lives of many
young people across the globe.
Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity
The basic purpose of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity is to foster brotherhood, service, and
scholarship. Phi Beta Sigma is a real brotherhood dedicated to service through
application of education obtained in scholarship. It has been a service organization since
it’s founding and has implemented many programs geared towards service to people in
their various communities.
Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc.
Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. was organized in 1922, on the campus of Butler
University in Indianapolis, Indiana. The Sorority was incorporated under the laws of the
State of Indiana in 1929. Its slogan, “Greater Service, Greater Progress,” serves as a
foundation for its objectives, projects, and activities.
Zeta Phi Beta Sorority
The Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, founded at Howard University on January 16, 1920, was
incorporated under the laws of the District of Columbia on March 30, 1923. The
objectives of finer womanhood, sisterly love, and scholarship have brought together
women from all parts of the world, women who have similar tastes and aspirations,
similar potential for the highest personal attainment, and similar desires for concerted
action to improve the conditions of the African communities around the world.
INDEPENDENT ORGANIZATIONS
Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc.
Founded in 1963 at Morgan State University, Iota Phi Theta aims to mold young men
into viable contributors to the organization and to society. Iota Phi Theta is a member of the
Council of Independent Organizations.
Nu Gamma Alpha Fraternity, Inc.
Gents, LTD is a group of men coming together in a complete and all encompassing spectrum
of social and business activities in an environment of total and undying brotherhood. The
organization was founded in Washington DC in 1962. Nu Gamma Alpha affirms their belief in
the worth and dignity of man. The Gents recognize the supreme importance of the pursuit of truth,
the encouragement of academic scholarship and the promotion of true brotherhood.
Sigma Alpha Omega Christian Sorority, Inc.
Sigma Alpha Omega is a Christian Sorority organized for the purpose of assisting and encouraging
the growth and development of Godly Christian women.
Groove Phi Groove Social Fellowship, Inc
Groove Phi Groove Social Fellowship, Inc was founded at Morgan State University on October 12, 1962.
The purpose of the fellowship is to promote academic awareness, good ethical standards and unity
among college and graduate men, to create intelligent and effective leadership, and to study and help
alleviate social and economic problems concerning society in order to improve the status of mankind.
Swing Phi Swing Fellowship, Inc
A non-profit organization dedicated to community service, academic excellence and heightening community
and cultural consciousness. The organization’s specific purpose is to support women in need of growth.
Support, which facilitates the attainment of goals that are necessary for personal and professional growth.
The programmatic thrust of this organization is scholarship assistance and collaboration with other
organizations sharing a common interest.
HONOR SOCIETIES
Alpha Chi
A co-educational society, whose purpose is to promote academic excellence and exemplary
character among college and university students, and to honor those achieving such distinctions.
Alpha Chi admits students from all disciplines of study.
Beta Kappa Chi
A national science honor society, that functions under the guidance of the faculty in the
physical and natural sciences. Membership is based upon scholastic achievement in the sciences.
Alpha Kappa Mu
The Alpha Omicron Chapter promotes high scholarship, to encourage sincere and zealous
endeavor in all fields of knowledge and service to cultivate a higher order of scholarly work.
Alpha Epsilon Rho
A national honor broadcasting society for outstanding students in the broadcasting
field, Alpha Epsilon Rho emphasizes superior scholarship and creative participation in broadcasting
production and activity to prepare members for the professional field.
