Graduation Fees

A graduation fee is charged to all degree applicants. Once your application has been submitted to the Office of Records & Registration the graduation fee will be posted to your account. The fee is non-refundable and covers the cost of your academic regalia and degree with cover.

 

 

All students should pay their graduation fee(s) in the Cashier's Office.

 

Students

Undergraduates:   $150.00
Graduates:           $200.00

Honors Information for Undergratuates

Graduating with Honors

Candidates for the Associate of Arts degree who have earned a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.50 - 4.00 will graduate with high honors.  These candidates will not wear honor cords, but their degrees may list their specific honors.

Bachelor degrees with Latin honors are awarded to undergraduate students who have earned 50 or more semester hours in residence at Shaw University, in accordance with the following scale:

Summa Cum Laude:                                 3.75 - 4.00

Magna Cum Laude:                                  3.50 - 3.74

Cum Laude:                                            3.25 - 3.49

 

Honor Cords

Bachelor Candidates who meet the cumulative GPA requirements (3.25 - 4.00) are eligible to wear an honor cord at commencement.  Graduation Candidates will receive honor cords at Commencement Rehearsal.

Invitations/Announcements, Academic Regalia, Degrees, and Rings

 

Academic Regalia

Order forms for caps and gowns can be filled out at the University Bookstore starting March 1, 2008.  The last day to order your academic regalia is March 31, 2008.  Any orders placed after March 31, 2008, apply a $20.00 late fee for shipping.

The Bookstore will send notification when academic regalia is available for pick up.

 

Degrees

Degrees will be sent by certified mail 6 - 8 weeks after Commencement.  If relocating after graduation remember to complete a change of address form. Change of address forms can be found on Shaw University's website under "Resources."

 

Invitations/Announcements

The Bookstore will make order forms available for personalized invitations/announcements. The Bookstore will also carry generic, non-personalized graduation announcements. To order personalized invitations and announcements contact Herff Jones at 919-544-3332 or order online at: www.herff-jones.com/college . You can also send an email to: waselb@aol.com .

 

Class Rings

Art Carved rings will be set-up inside the Willie E. Gary Student Union to take ring orders. Please contact the University Bookstore for more information.

For Undergraduates

At the beginning of the semester or session in which you are expecting to complete both University and major requirements, undergraduates must officially apply for graduation.

Fulfillment of all requirements for the degree applied, the University's requirements, and completion of the official application for graduation are the student's responsibility.

 

Academic Requirements

Candidates for a degree must complete all of the specific requirements of Shaw University and of the School/College and Department in which they major.  This also includes completing the CASES requirement.

Graduation Clearance Process

Academic attire will be issued to graduating seniors who have completed the following clearance process:

Level 1:  Academic Clearance

  • Candidates for degree(s) must satisfy all of Shaw University's requirements and those of the School/College and Department in which they major.
  • Candidates for degree(s) must satisfy all degree requirements:
    • Complete specified number of hours for degree(s)
    • Meet the minimum cumulative overall GPA for major(s)
  • Candidates for degree(s) must take and pass the competency test for Mathematics and English (Day students only).
  • Candidates for degree(s) must satisfy and complete the CASES requirements (Day students only).

Note from the Office of Fiscal Affairs: Final Financial Clearance by Student Accounts for ‘Graduating' seniors will be conducted the week of May 5th – 9th. Information outlining specific details of the Fiscal Clearance process will be posted on main campus and mailed to each CAPE site by the Office of Fiscal Affairs.

Student Account Clearance slips for CAPE students who have a zero balance on or before April 20, 2008 will be mailed to each CAPE Director for distribution to students. Clearance slips for Raleigh CAPE and Divinity students with a zero balance will be issued by the Raleigh CAPE office and Divinity school. This process will only be for CAPE and Divinity students with a ZERO BALANCE . All other students must report to Tyler Hall for Fiscal Clearance during the designated time.

Personal checks will not be accepted after April 13, 2008. Beginning April 16, 2008 seniors will be required to pay by cash, certified check, Visa card, or Money Order.

For any further information regarding the Fiscal Clearance process please contact the Office of Fiscal Affairs (Student Accounts) in Tyler Hall.

Level 2:  Financial Clearance

    1. Obtain the Application for Graduation form from the Office of Records and Registration.  (This form should have been filed by October 29, 2008)
    2. Bring form to your advisor to be cleared for the graduation process.
    3. Once you are cleared your advisor will return the form to the Office of the Registrar.  The graduation fee will then be posted to your account.
      • Undergraduate Students - $150.00
      • Graduate Students - $200.00
    4. Before going to Student Accounts you must complete the following requirements:
      • Receive clearance form from the James E. Cheeks Learning Resources Center (Main Library).  CAPE students will receive a library clearance form from their CAPE Director. Raleigh CAPE students will be cleared through the Main Library. Divinity school students will be cleared through the Divinity Library. Once you are cleared you can no longer check out books.
      • Go through Loan Exit Counseling (even if you are a Presidential Scholar and/or have received a loan).  All seniors who have loans must complete an exit interview with the Financial Aid Office. Obtain Financial Aid clearance form from the Office of Financial Aid.
      • Visit Campus Police and Security and bring a valid driver's license and vehicle registration (all information must match). If you have no outstanding balance you will receive a clearance slip.
    5. Go to Student Accounts to check account balance.
      • If you do not have any outstanding balances obtain final clearance form from Office of Fiscal Affairs (Student Accounts).
      • Students with an outstanding balance are to proceed to the Cashier's Office. Once your balance is paid obtain final clearance form from Student Accounts. Take all all 4 clearance forms (Library, Financial Aid, Campus Police and Security, and the Cashier's Office) to Student accounts for stamp of approval/clearance.
    6. Take all 4 clearance forms (Library, Financial Aid, Campus Police and Security, and the Cashier's Office) to the University Bookstore to pick-up your cap and gown.


Note:  When filling out your Application for Graduation Form and Response Card write your name as you would like it to appear on your degree.  Please write the current/local address that you use while attending Shaw University (mailings concerning graduation will be sent to this address).

Degrees:  If you are relocating after graduation remember to complete a change of address form.  This form can be completed online or in the Office of Records & Registration.  Your degree will be mailed to the address listed in the University System.
