- About
the Library
The hospital building, originally erected on the Shaw University Campus in 1910, was designated in 1921, to house the Library, Home Economics Department, and Teacher's Club. The building became simply known as Library Hall.
In 1932, Dr. Robert Tyler, an alumnus of Shaw University, donated $5,000.00 for the renovation and enlargement of the library. The name of the building was later changed to Tyler Hall. This building housed the library until 1968 when, under the leadership of the seventh president Dr. James E. Cheek, a new library building was erected in the center of the campus.
The current library building named in honor of the seventh president, is the James E. Cheek Learning Resources Center. The 20,000 square foot facility consists of two floors and a partial third level mechanical room. The library has the capacity to house 170,000 volumes and to seat approximately 500 students.
