Raleigh, NC (December 17, 2003) – Two Shaw University students were recognized at the 21st Annual University-Community Brotherhood Dinner held at North Carolina State University for demonstrating excellence in the areas of scholastic abilities and humanitarianism.  Bennett College president, Dr. Johnnetta B. Cole, was the honoree for the dinner due to her numerous achievements.  The dinner was held on December 12th. Dr. Cole made a presentation prior to the dinner entitled “Are You Your Sister’s and Your Brother’s Keeper?”

Established in 1982, the Brotherhood Dinner plays an important role in recognizing African-Americans who have made and continue to make significant contributions to our nation and the world.  The Dinner also reaffirms the university and the community’s commitment to enhancing an environment where people of all races may come together to study and work. Some of the previous honorees were former United States Representative, Eva M. Clayton; astronaut, Colonel Guion S. Bluford, Jr.; artist and educator, Dr. Margaret Burroughs; historian, John Hope Franklin; and educator and civil rights pioneer, Robert Moses.

This year’s dinner was hosted by NC State Chancellor Marye Ann Fox and focused on  both the lifetime of achievements of Dr. Cole and students from Shaw University, North Carolina State University, and Saint Augustine’s College.  The two students who proudly represented Shaw University in excellence and achievement were James J. Bailey II, a senior majoring in computer science and Deidre Coleman, a senior majoring in mathematics.  Bailey and Coleman are both from Savannah, GA.
