Shaw University Creates Partnership with Second Northwest
Nationality University of the People’s Republic of China
Shaw University will host the president and a
delegation from the Second Northwest Nationality University (NNU) of
the People’s Republic of China to solidify an academic partnership
between the two universities. The delegation will be on the Shaw
University campus for the Partnership Signing Ceremony on Thursday,
November 9, 2006, at 10:30 am in the Auditorium of Historic Estey
Hall.
The purpose of the partnership is to promote international
cooperation and exchange between NNU and Shaw. Shaw University has
the technological infrastructure to deliver educational, economic,
and cultural experiences to the faculty and students involved in the
exchange, and will allow for collaboration with other educational
and international corporations in Raleigh and Wake County.
In these early stages of the partnership, both universities will
carry out activities of cooperation and exchange to include sending
scholars/faculty to each institution for teaching, research, and
training to range from one month to one academic year beginning in
July 2007. Language Institutes will be created at both universities
to assist faculty in English and Chinese as a second language. Other
activities of common interest will evolve in the future.
Shaw University is the first historically black college or
university in the South (1865), home of the nation’s first four-year
medical school, The Leonard Medical School (1882-1918), and the
first private HBCU invited to participate in the North Carolina
Model Teacher Education Consortium. Since 2003, Shaw University has
been under the leadership of Dr. Clarence G. Newsome whose
administrative motto is “Strides to Excellence: Only the Best!”
