Pre-CIAA Tournament Jazz Concert to Honor Shaw
Basketball Teams
Raleigh, NC – (January 31, 2007) The Department of Athletics at
Shaw University and WSHA 88.9 FM are sponsoring a Pre-CIAA
Tournament Jazz Concert in Estey Hall on February 24th at 3:00 p.m.
to honor the men and women’s basketball teams of Shaw University.
This unique send-off is the beginning of what promises to be an
exciting week of competition between the eleven historically black
institutions of higher learning in Charlotte, NC from February 26 –
March 3rd at the 93rd CIAA Basketball Tournament. Established in
1912, the CIAA is the nation's oldest black athletic conference,
rich in history and heritage.
The Platinum Sound Band under the leadership of Charles Brown will
provide the pep and pomp as we honor the student athletes and
coaches that have worked hard for the University. The Lady Bears are
looking to defend their historic Four-Peat Championship reign during
the Tournament. The men’s team is also looking for a successful week
of competition.
The Freeman Ledbetter Quartet and The Steve Hobbs Quartet are
scheduled to perform for the event. The Freeman Ledbetter Quartet
members include Mr. Ledbetter on bass; Robert Trower, trombone;
Cliff Wallace, drums, Arnold George, piano and the vocal styling of
Adia. The Steve Hobbs Quartet members include Mr. Hobbs on vibes;
Ivan Hampden, drums; George Knott, bass and Ryan Hansler on
keyboard.
Alumni and friends of Shaw University are encouraged to come out and
participate in this free event as we send off the outstanding
athletic ambassadors of Shaw University to Charlotte, North Carolina
for the 93rd CIAA Tournament. The first 300 will be admitted to the
auditorium. A shirt signed by both teams will be given away during
the Concert.
We look to see you there full of Shaw Pride and support!
