Shaw University Reflects on Brown v. Board of Ed. to Reach for a Better Future

Raleigh, NC - (June 2, 2004) - Shaw University and the Raleigh
Chapter of The Links Inc., commemorated the 50th Anniversary
of the Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court Case by hosting The
Tolling of the Bells Ceremony on Monday, May 17th, 2004 at 12:15
p.m., in the University’s Memorial Gardens.
Shaw University President, Dr. Clarence G. Newsome, gave the welcome
address and the invocation. The Honorable Allyson K. Duncan, Judge
of the Fourth Circuit Court stated the purpose of the occasion.
Raleigh Mayor Charles Meeker, Wake County Commissioners Chairman Ken
Gardner and State Auditor Ralph Campbell gave citations and read the
certificate of proclamation.
Promptly at 12:52 p.m. Link, Lucille Webb and
Shaw’s Dean of the Chapel, Dr. Quincy Scott, Jr., tolled the bells
to honor the moment that the Supreme Court handed down the decision
that ‘separate but equal’ schools were unconstitutional.
A delegation of personnel and students from The
Vital Link School and the Raleigh Nursery School also attended the
celebration.
Shaw University, founded in 1865, is the oldest historically Black institution in the South. Since 2003, the University has been under the leadership of Dr. Clarence G. Newsome. President Newsome’s leadership pursues the theme: “Strides to Excellence: Only the Best!”
