Student Health Center - General Information

Office Hours

Monday through Friday | 9:00 a.m.- 5:00 p.m. 

Doctor’s Clinic Hours: Tuesday and Friday I 3:pm – 5:pm    


Eligibility 

All full-time Raleigh regular students that have cleared financially and medically are offered unlimited visits to the Student Health Center. All students must provide a valid Shaw University identification card on each visit.

BearsCare is a Telehealth service provided by Timely MD, available to all students, faculty and staff, 24/7 at no cost. If students have concerns about COVID – 19, or other medical or psychiatric issues, BearsCare is always there. To use this service, visit bearscare.com or call customer support at 833.484.6359. 


Student Health Insurance

  • Student Health information can be found at  www.eiiastudent.org/shaw  
  • CAPE, special students, and students with less than 12 hours are not covered in the insurance plan   


Student Illness

Illness During Office Hours 

Students residing on campus that become ill must report to the Health Center in person, unless they are too ill to get out of bed. If unable to come to the Health Center, the student may report their illness to the Resident Director, Resident Counselor, the RA on their hall, or by calling the Health Center. Under no circumstances should a student remain in their room ill without notifying someone. No class excuses will be issued for unreported illnesses.

Illness and Emergencies after Office Hours 

An emergency is a life threatening condition that calls for immediate action. Examples: Inability to breathe, profuse bleeding, unconsciousness, chest pain accompanied with nausea and profuse sweating.

Contact: Residence Staff, Residence Staff, Residence Assistant, Security or 911.  

If admitted to the hospital, report to the health center after discharge with all related paperwork. Within 48 – 72 hours.  If not admitted, report to the health center on the following workday or within 48 -72 hours.  Any medical excuses more than 30 days, excuses denied. 

Off-Campus Raleigh Regular Students 

Students who become too ill to attend class must report the illness to the nurse by telephone immediately, before or during the missed class. When the nurse is not notified a doctor's excuse must be presented before a medical excuse can be issued through the health center.

Hospitalization or Confinement at Home by a Doctor: 

Students who have been under a doctor's care must submit a written statement from the doctor before returning to class. The statement should include the date first seen by the doctor, date of release, the diagnosis, and any remaining physical limitations. The doctor’s/hospital release to return to class must be presented to the instructors when returning to class.


Immunizations North Carolina Law Student Physical Requirement  

Shaw University's policy mandates that all new and returning students have a record of medical history and a physical examination report signed by a physician on file in the Student Health Center. This information is required at the time of enrollment at Shaw University and should be updated while attending the university. The students who do not have current medical requirements on file will not be seen in the health center they will be referred to the doctor’s office or emergency room..

 A physical can be obtained in the health center by the University Physician’s for a minimum fee of $45, payable at the time of service. An appointment is not required.

ALL PHYSICALS MUST BE SIGNED BY A PHYSICIAN, AND BEAR THE OFFICE STAMP WITH THE OFFICE ADDRESS AND TELEPHONE NUMBER. 


HIV/AIDS Information

Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) Policy

Shaw University has adopted education, counseling, and making referrals its primary response to HIV/AIDS. The University is committed to providing students and employees with education on the nature, transmission, and protection against HIV/AIDS and the legal rights of persons infected with the disease. This policy applies to all Shaw University students and employees.

HIV Testing Sites

Shaw University Health Center is a testing site for HIV/AIDS and Syphilis.
